Breaking the silence on Rape
For some weeks now, I have been working on an important topic/issue. Rape is actually a pervasive issue but the victims are not speaking up. I'm compelled to share crucial insights. We must work together as a team to prevent rape and support survivors.
A Call to Action for Parents:
- Prioritize your child's safety and well-being.
- Research and ensure your child's boarding school is secure.
- Foster open communication with your child, never be too busy to listen to them. Be their best friend.
- Teach sex education and boundaries at an early age.
- Be observant and responsive to changes in your child's behavior. Never ignore the slightest changes.
- Never cover up rape incidents; report them to the appropriate authorities. This will further reduce the act.
- Avoid blaming your child for rape incidents.
A Call to Action for Educators:
- Recognize your role as a guardian (Loco Parentis).
- Be aware of changes in students' behavior. They might actually be using displacement mechanism at such period. Giving punitive measures to victims is only worsening the situation.
- Provide a safe, non-judgmental space for students to share concerns.
- Maintain confidentiality to encourage open communication.
A Call to Action for School Administrators:
- Employ licensed Educational Psychologists or Counsellors.
- Ensure a safe, supportive environment for students.
Together we can break the silence surrounding rape and create a safer and more supportive community for all.
