Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver age-appropriate remote therapy/counselling sessions for children and adolescents (0-18 years), utilising suitable methods (e.g., talking therapy, play, creative techniques online).
- Conduct relevant assessments and develop collaborative formulations appropriate for CYP mental health needs.
- Work systemically and collaboratively with parents, carers, and families, providing guidance and support where appropriate.
- Liaise with other professionals (e.g., schools, GPs, CAMHS) with appropriate consent, when necessary for coordinated care.
- Maintain clear, accurate, and confidential clinical records adhering to GDPR, safeguarding principles (including Fraser/Gillick competence where relevant), and your professional body's guidelines for working with minors.
- Manage appointments, communication with young people and/or parents/carers, and fee arrangements directly.
- Adhere strictly to safeguarding policies and procedures for children and vulnerable young adults.
- Engage regularly in clinical supervision with a supervisor experienced in working with children and adolescents.
Essential Requirements:
ALL candidates MUST demonstrate specific qualifications AND significant experience in therapeutic work with children and adolescents, hold an Enhanced DBS check suitable for working with children (within the last 3 years or on the Update Service), and have up-to-date safeguarding training for children.
In addition, you must meet the requirements of ONE of the following professional pathways:
- Pathway 1: Psychotherapist Route
- Recognised postgraduate qualification specifically in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (e.g., ACP recognised, UKCP accredited Child/Adolescent specialism) OR a core Psychotherapy qualification (e.g., Master's/PG Dip accredited by UKCP/BACP) PLUS substantial additional specialist training in CYP therapy AND extensive supervised experience with this age group.
- Current registration/accreditation with a relevant professional body (e.g., ACP, UKCP's College for Children and Young People, BACP with proven CYP competence).
- Pathway 2: Psychologist Route
- Doctoral level qualification in Clinical, Counselling, or Educational Psychology (HCPC approved).
- Current registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical, Counselling, or Educational domain).
- Demonstrable doctoral-level training components AND/OR significant post-qualification experience and CPD focused specifically on working therapeutically with children and adolescents.
- Pathway 3: Counsellor Route
- Core counselling qualification (Minimum Diploma Level 4, preferably Postgraduate Diploma/Master's Level 7) recognised/accredited by BACP, UKCP, or NCS.
- PLUS a specific additional qualification or substantial accredited training module(s) focused on counselling children and young people.
- Current registration/accreditation with BACP, UKCP, or NCS, clearly demonstrating assessed competence/specialism in working with CYP (e.g., through specific membership category, accreditation, or register notation).
Common Requirements for All Pathways:
- Proven ability to engage therapeutically with children and adolescents remotely.
- Strong understanding of child development, attachment theory, and mental health issues pertinent to CYP.
- Commitment to ongoing, specialist clinical supervision focused on CYP work.
- Valid Professional Indemnity Insurance covering therapeutic work with children and adolescents in the UK.
- Legal right to work on a self-employed basis in the UK.
- Reliable internet, suitable device, and a private, secure workspace for sessions.
- Excellent communication skills (with children, adolescents, and adults), empathy, ethical integrity, and robust safeguarding awareness.
Desirable Requirements:
- Accredited status with your relevant professional body (e.g., BACP Accreditation, UKCP Registration, HCPC Registration, ACP Membership).
- Specialist training/experience in specific areas (e.g., neurodevelopmental conditions, trauma-informed practice with CYP, eating disorders, specific modalities like DDP, Theraplay, CYP-IAPT therapies).
